We want each potential adopter to take the time, before you adopt, to learn about retired racing Greyhounds to fully understand the type of dog you will be adopting. QCG wants to ensure a Greyhound fits your expectations and lifestyle.

Step 1: Are you Ready to Adopt

If you decide a Greyhound is right for you, then we recommend reading one of the following books on greyhound adoption: Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan (Revised Edition), and Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood. If you have young children, we strongly recommend that you read Childproofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommons. The more you know, the happier your dog and you will be.  QCG is available as well to answer any questions you may have.

Please consider the following:

· Are you financially prepared to invest in premium dog food, collars and leashes, annual health checks, unexpected veterinarian visits, heartworm preventative, flea control, and caring for your Greyhound for an approximate lifespan of 12 to 14 years?

· Are you prepared to keep your Greyhound on a leash whenever it is outdoors unless it is in a fenced-in area? Never trust your Greyhound to not run away. He can be very difficult to get back, and percentages show that the majority of Greyhounds are hit by cars if they get loose.

· Do you have a fence? Fences are required if a child is under 2 years old (no invisible/underground fencing or tie-outs are acceptable).

· Are you committed to keep your Greyhound as a house companion for the life of the greyhound? Greyhounds must live indoors.

Step 2:  Complete and  Submit the Adoption Application

You can call for an application to be mailed to you, download an application in PDF format to either mail or e-mail to us, or use our online application.

Once your application is received, someone will call you within a day or two to schedule a telephone interview and home visit. If you do not hear from us within a couple days, please call.  We are all volunteers and do the best to get back to you as soon as possible.

Step 3:  Meet the Hounds/Home Visit

A good way to meet our Greyhounds is by attending one of our Meet & Greets and talking to other adopters about your needs and Greyhounds.  Moreover, many of our foster parents will agree to a one-on-one visit.  If there is a particular dog in which you are interested, please state the dog’s name on the adoption application.

We will visit your home with a Greyhound before final adoption to ensure that the dog fits in and will adjust to expectations and lifestyle.

Step 4: Adoption Fee and Contract

Adoption fees help cover the greyhound’s spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm check, physical exam, transportation, and care while the dog is fostered. Adoption Fee is $225.00 with the following exceptions: Second Chance at Life Prison Dog (SCAL) $300.00, Special Needs or Senior Greyhound 125.00
