Zoomer’s Story

Check here to read the updated progress of this sweet girl.

February 8, 2010

On the 22nd of December the race started, and in it was a beautiful red girl named Sooner Zoomer. As the race was on she raced to the very front as she did in most of her races. Zoomer was an "A" racer., that is top of the line in Birmingham, and had run in that grade race for most of the time she was at the track. On the second turn there was a mishap, she and two other dogs hit the ground, Zoomer was the unfortunate one, she shattered her left hock. That kind of injury would let the best of them suddenly down to stay. Not Zoomer, up she went, continued on, finished the race and even finished ahead of one other dog. That injury has ended the career of a dog that loved racing better than any other thing in her life. The track vet bandaged her injury, and for one month she moved very slowly on a very sore back leg. on January 19th that wrap was changed and the vet made the decision that Zoomer needed surgery to properly repair that hock. A call from Bob, her trainer, to Queen City Greyhounds, resulted in Zoomer making a trip to Cincinnati on January 30.. She is being watched very closely by Dr. Legorreta at Woodridge.Veterinary Hospital. That cast will be on that leg for at least another 6-8 weeks, then removed and more x-rays done to see how the healing has progressed. There will be progress reports on Zoomer in the weeks to come so everyone can see how this beautiful girl is progressing.

Today Zoomer got to go for a ride in the car. She dearly loves the car and likes watching out the windows,. Anyone she sees walking down the sidewalk she sends them a hugh tail wag. She is a very happy girl. She had to make a visit to her vet to have the broken leg checked. She had to weigh in when we got there. Shehappily jumped on the scale and stood real still. For a few moments I think she was thinking she was weighing in at the track and was about to hit the track running. Everyone there loves on her and she eats it up. The tail never stops all the while we are there. She was taken back and x-rayed and seemed to enjoy every minute of the attention. The doctor said that the x-rayed showed that the leg seems to be healing very well. In two weeks we are making another trip there and the cast will be removed. At that time we will know exactly how it has healed. If there are still problems it will have to be secured in another way. We're just keeping our fingers crossed that those bones are all back together as they were before that terrible fall on the track in Birmingham. Meanwhile Zoomer is enjoying her life in retirement Now she has learned that living in a home with other lazy greyhounds is the way she likes. Will keep you updated the next time we venture off to see the doctor.  - Joan
